Starting with only $5,000.00, Phillip Di Bella founded Di Bella Coffee in 2002; twelve years on it has grown into what is Australia’s largest specialty coffee company. During this time Phillip has learnt many lessons and, here, he shares 5 simple tips to success.
It’s always about meeting the need of the customer -
Be clear about which customers you serve (and which you don’t), what needs are you trying to meet, and which products, features, or services will create value for that customer. More simply, if you can’t solve someone’s problem you don’t have a business.
Have a unique value proposition compared to competitors -
Don’t copy your competitors but rather focus on the unique value your product or service brings to your customer. A successful business clearly articulates what’s unique about them and HOW they are going to continuously provide that uniqueness to their customer. Be a leader, not a follower.
Poor communication is the common reason for failure -
Become an expert in communicating why someone needs you and what you can do/solve for them. The 30 second elevator pitch is a great way to practice improving your communication. An elevator pitch is a clear, brief message or “commercial” about your business. It communicates who you are, what you’re looking for and how you can benefit your customer. Always communicate from that perspective and you will become a better communicator.
A good idea goes nowhere without ACTION –
In business you will speak with many people that have great ideas, but a year or two from now, they are still talking about it. Great leader form the habit of DOING. The difference between success and failure lies in taking that first step.
Always be comfortable with your worst possible scenario –
The best risk management plan is to think about the worse possible outcome and to get comfortable with it. Why? Because removing the doubt and fear will be the catalyst to motivate you to develop a hardened will to move forward and succeed.
